Where dit it all start?
Our founder, Ben van der Merwe originally started this business in 1994 as a small consultancy business. Employers were mainly assisted with Human Resource functions such as staff recruitment and career development.
During the course of 1996 the Labour Relations Act was promulgated, creating the need for legal expertise in the Human Resource field and creating the field of Industrial Relations. The need for expert assistance became apparent and the labour relations department was formed.
Over the next few years the Labour Relations department expanded as more and more HR/IR Practitioners joined the fast growing business. In 2000 the company had to move into formal business premises as it had outgrown its’ small origins.
Expansion and Birth of HR City
The constantly expanding client base meant that as a key HR solutions provider, the company was called upon to deliver more and more specialised services, such as Labour Hire, and Payroll Administration.
Soon, the business again outgrew its’ premises and the current property at 46 Walter Sisulu street was acquired.
In 2005 the company, then known as Personnel Management Services unbundled its’ various services as separate business entities and these individual business were grouped under the new umbrella of HR City.
Following this restructuring, in 2006 the HR City brand with the now familiar orange, silver and grey was established and rolled out across the business.
In 2007 the need for a training division resulted in the creation of one of our largest divisions to date.
The success of the new training division required the expansion into catering in 2010 and the groundwork was laid for what was to become Yum-Yum Cuisine in 2011 and Event City in 2015.
Boasting four star conference and venue hire facilities and now a huge events arena opposite the Middelburg Mall, HR City has grown from strength to strength, always maintaining the level of quality and expertise which our client base has grown accustomed to.
